Martha Koome Inches Closer to Becoming Next CJ

Tuesday, April 27, 2021 -Lady Justice Martha Koome has won interviews recently conducted for the next Kenya’s Chief Justice.

The Judicial Service Commission JSC on Tuesday April 27 announced the name of Justice Koome after their two week intensive interrogation of the applicants.

“The JSC has unanimously recommended the appointment of Hon Lady Justice Koome Martha Karabu, judge of the Court of Appeal as the Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya,” JSC vice chair Olive Mugenda said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to now forward her name to the National Parliament for approval, and if sworn in, Ms Koome will be the first female Justice in the country. She tried to unsuccessfully seek for the job last time.

Her background revealed she has 33 years of experience in legal practice in and outside the country.

“Whatever work God puts in my hands, I do it with passion and I remove all my arsenals to do that job and achieve what it is that I need to achieve,” Koome stated in her interview.

She also told the interviewing panel that she will have to make a call to the head of State so that to solve the current impasse surrounding approval of the 41 judges.

“Even if it has been tried before, I am not the one who did so I would try again. I don’t know anybody in the executive. The closest I came to his Excellency was when he came here on the launch of the state of the judiciary report and we were invited on the stairs to take a picture,” she recounted.

If her name sails through the floor, she will definitely be deputised by the current acting Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu who is about to wind up her tenure.

Among those who faced the panel for the CJ position are Justice Said Juma Chitembwe, Prof. Patricia Mbote, Justice Marete Njagi, lawyer Philip Murgor, Lawyer Fredrick Ngatia, Justice Matthews Nduma, Justice William Ouko, Prof. Moni Wekesa and lawyer Alice Yano.
