Sunday, May 2, 2021 -Senator James Aggrey Orengo has made a sharp statement over media reports that he had bowed to elites’ Pressure to support BBI passage the way it.
Today on Sunday May 2, the vocal lawyer also close ally to Raila Odinga, responded to the media reports terming such as malicious.
MPs Orengo, Otiende Amollo and Nyamira MP Okong’o Omugeni last week signed a report by the Joint Legal Affairs Committee JLAC to force the BBI draft Bill to undergo further scrutiny.
They argued that the distribution of the 70 new areas of representation needed a review so that other areas could equally benefit.
Orengo and his team argued that the 70 new areas must be redistributed in accordance with the law and added that the Parliament will not be used to rubber stamp constitutional matters without being consulted.
And today Sunday, a local media house reported that the lawmaker had changed tune and now wants it passed the way it is.
“The BBI bill be passed by the Senate and the National Assembly next week, then a referendum in July or August, I hope you will all vote in support when the time comes,” the media quoted Orengo’s Saturday speech during the burial of Keziah Obama who is step mother to former US President Barrack Obama.
But the lawyer quickly responded to the claims saying he had not changed his mind as reported and that he still practices consistency in politics.
“Sijabadilisha msimamo. Sijakua mnafiki au mwoga kwa siasa zangu. Wacha story zenu,” Orengo tweeted in response to the story.
Both Orengo and MP Amollo have created a division in ODM Party by mounting pressure for corrections in the BBI Bill before passage; a move that has increased tension in their party.
