Thursday, June 3, 2021 -Nurses in Nanyuki are on the spot for negligence after they abandoned a woman on the waiting bench to mark a birthday for their colleague.
A 58 year old mother is reported to have succumbed to illness while waiting to be attended to by nurses who were busy partying in a room somewhere within the facility. The incident took place at Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital on Monday May 31.
According to sources, the mother identified as Halima Hassan was taken ill at the facility by her son Ramadhan Hassan Omar when she developed health problems.
“On several occasions, I approached a male nurse for help who felt I was nagging and rudely told me off,” Omar informed K24 Digital.
Omar told the publication that at that time so many other patients were waiting for attention on the queuing bench but no nurse was concerned. Many of them were waiting for laboratory results.
He would, unfortunately, learn later that the lab technician together with colleagues were busy partying in birthday event in one of the rooms.
Reacting on the matter, Laikpia County Health CEC Rose Maitai said the matter was being investigated and anyone found culpable will be punished in accordance with existing health laws.
This is not the only case in the country, many patients have lost lives while waiting for nurses to attend to them. For example, in 2020 a patient succumbed to illness while at the Kenyatta National Hospital KNH parking lot. This was after he waited for treatment for so long.
