Wednesday, July 7, 2021 -President Uhuru Kenyatta yesterday at night commissioned various health projects around Nairobi slums as part of government’s latest efforts to de-congest the Kenyatta National Hospital KNH.
Latest finding indicated that KNH had been congested and services were becoming rare by day calling for a quick reaction from the Nairobi Metropolitan Services NMS. The commissioned projects are part of the 24 health facilities.
Uhuru was accompanied by the NMS boss General Badi Mohammed among other senior government officials. He started by commissioning two level 2 hospitals at Gichagi Kangemi and Gatina in Kawangware. He would later drive to Mukuru kwa Reuben where he commissioned three level 3 hospitals which were spread also in Tassia kwa Ndege and Our Lady of Nazareth in Mukuru wa Njenga.
The president defended his night activities saying the decision to work at night was informed by the fact that there is still Covid-19 virus which doest allow daytime activities.
“We went at night because we wanted to ensure that we were observing Covid-19 protocols. As you have seen for yourselves, it would have been impossible to go and do what we did today, during the day because of the number of people who would have been out there. It would have been very difficult for us to do the job we wanted to do and at the same time observe Covid protocols that the government has put in place,” Uhuru said.
Plans are that the commissioned facilities will be operational on a 24 hour basis so as to allow residents to access health services at night. This is a sharp departure from the normal 8-5PM hospitals which, according to president, have been denying locals late services.

“So we decided it was important that these hospitals that we are building operate on a 24 hours’ basis. This is what we also wanted to see whether it was possible both on accessibility point of view and staffing point of view,” the President added.
Already Nairobi Metropolitan has confirmed having completed 19 hospitals out of a total of 24 that are required.
