Zambia’s new President Hichilema Sworn in

Tuesday, August 24, 2021 -Zambia has sworn in a new head of State Hakainde Hichilema in an event attended by many African Presidents including President Uhuru Kenyatta from Kenya.

Mr. Hichilema 59 took oath of office on Tuesday August 24 as the 7th president of the South African Nation and will be deputised by Mrs Mutale Namulango.

The swearing in ceremony took place at National Heroes Stadium NHS and presided over by Zambia’s acting Chief Justice Michael Musonda.

In his maiden speech, the former opposition leader announced that his administration will make sure there are equal opportunities to all citizens. He also said his government will champion for freedom as it is discussed in the Constitution.

The President further talked about the rule of law as well as fixing the country’s ailing economy amid Covid-19 challenges.

“I am a simple village boy you have made the 7th President. This victory is for all Zambians, especially the youth who came out in great numbers to vote. We showed the whole world the resilience of our democracy.

“We will focus on inclusion and not exclusion; unity and not division; and gathering and not scattering of our people,” President Hichilema stated.

He also described it as remarkable after his predecessor allowed for a peaceful transfer of power which is always a rare gesture in Africa.

“We have shown the whole world the resilience of democracy, the people have decided it was time for change and we can say change is here,” he said.

Those who had a chance to address among them President Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi and Feklix Tshisekedi of DRC lauded Zambia for demonstrating that peaceful power transfer can still take place within the continent.

Hichilema managed to beat the incumbent after he secured a whopping 2,810,777 votes against Edgar Lungu’s 1,814,201.
