Tuesday, September 19, 2023 –A surveillance helicopter belonging to the Kenya Defence Forces KDF crashed into Boni Forest on Monday September 18 night.
In a statement from the department, the copter crashed while doing routine patrols always done daily around the vast forest located in Lamu County.
KDF statement further divulged that the plane ‘Huey helicopter’ broke down but failed to announce how many soldiers were on board at the time of the incident.
Huey is a utility military helicopter designed and produced by the American aerospace company – Bell Helicopter.
“A Kenya Air Force Huey Helicopter was crushed last night while on night patrol in Lamu County. The crew and other military personnel onboard were part of an air surveillance squadron intensifying day and night patrols and surveillance for the ongoing Operation Amani Boni,” KDF stated.
This desk has learnt that the KDF has since mounted a recovery and evacuation exercise as investigations on the matter commences.
Additionally, an inquiry board has been formed and dispatched to the scene so that to help establish the course of the accident.
This is the second crash this year, even as experts query the airworthiness of military aircraft in the country.
