Sunday, October 10, 2021 -President of France Emmanuel Macron was forced to respond to media personally Adelle Onyango who had confronted him over past colonial injustices.
Adelle had accused France of long denial to its colonial crimes in Africa saying the continent still fees the destructive past of their actions.
The panel discussion was taking place at Montpeller on Friday October 8 and had 11 other young Africans who had come together to discuss democracy.
“What we end up with is skepticism of what exactly does France stand for,” she said to fierce applause at the meeting of around 3,000 Africans invited to the gathering in Montpellier.
She challenged France leadership to champion for African democracy rather than fueling dictatorship by recognizing dictators who have clung on power because they wield too much of it in their hands.
And in his response, Macron said that Paris has routinely had issues with political or military coups on the continent. He also stated that they are not in cooperation with authoritarian regimes across the world.
“I have never set up a military base unless being asked” by democratically legitimate leaders,” he said. I don’t believe that we can free ourselves of this history. I believe in a policy of recognition,” he continued.
Mauritanian Blogger Cheikh Fall joined the debate by asking the France administration to stop supporting dictators and pressured him to offer an apology over that.
