Thursday, July 27, 2023 –Kenya Power token systems has allegedly been hacked into by suspected Sudanese hackers who made this confirmation today.
The hacker clique dubbed Anonymous Sudan which, of late, has been a threat to many service providers in the country, on Thursday July 27, took to social media to announce another breakthrough after cracking into the utility provider token systems.
“Some of our operations, we have attacked the Kenya Power and Lighting Company and we will continue to attack more. Everyone thinks that all our attacks are Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) but we managed to get access to all the backend,” the hacking group posted.
After this attack, Kenyans who attempted to access the token system today, could not make it as the transaction failed even on several attempts.
“Transaction failed, M-PESA cannot complete payment of sh100.00 to KPLC PREPAID. The Organization’s system receiving the payment experienced some technical challenges, try again later,” read the message from KPL.
Though the Kenya Power KPLC top officials and engineers denied this attack, the development has come after government eCitizen platform was also said to have been under a similar threat.
The hackers, made this confirmation another success through their Telegram channel even after ICT Cabinet Secretary, Eliud Owalo, had assured the country of safety. He said, as a government, it was well-prepared to safeguard its systems from external threats.
“There is no cause for alarm, we have adequate resources to deal with cases of cyber insecurity,” CS Owalo assured.
This dangerous group has been causing havoc in the country since Monday July 24. It claimed attacks on major Telcos, leading media outlets as well as State-owned website.
