Thursday, March 3, 2022 –Graft case facing Migori County Governor Okoth Obado may be thrown out after it emerged that all the crucial evidence was burnt down.
The sh 505 million case took a fresh twist after a witness claimed to the court that mysterious fire destroyed all reliable documents in the county procurement office what has made it hard to nail the governor.
Making his submission in the court stand, Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission lead investigator Robert Cheruiyot Rono said the documents which got destroyed were the only one they could have used to charge the governor over the embezzled millions.
“The timing of the fire incident raised a lot of questions on whether there was a deliberate and concerted effort to delay investigations into the alleged embezzlement of public funds, given that it happened on the eve of the day we were to be supplied with the evidence,” he stated.
He went ahead to detail that when they tried to ask for the 2013 – 2017 tender documents, the governor wasted alot time before they heard of fire having razed down the office.
“On the day he was to bring the documents on September 11 2017, the company secretary failed to turn up. We raised concerns and on September 20, 2017, we issued him another notice to produce the documents,” Mr. Rono reported.
Currently, they are waiting for the Investigating agencies from the DCI office to find out what caused the destructive fire.
“The DCIO established that the arson actually took place and that nothing was rescued… They stated that after evaluating the circumstances, there was evidence to show any person was responsible for the fire,” he added.
Since they (Obado and his four children) were charged in court, their cases have been dillydallying and could soon end prematurely.
Apart from this fraud case, Obado is also facing Sharon Otieno’s murder case which may also not end with any justice.
