Angolan President Fails to Attend Mashujaa Day Despite Being Chief Guest

Friday, October 20, 2023 –Angolan President Joao Lourenco arrived in Nairobi on Thursday October 19 to be Chief Guest at the Mashujaa Day celebrations which he didn’t attend.

The Angolan head of State, instead, chose to send his Foreign Affairs Minister Antonio to represent him in the Kericho event.

This happened despite the fact that Prime Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Musalia Mudavadi had ealier assured the country that H.E Lourenco who will also be holding bilateral talks with President Ruto, will be the chief guest.

“During the visit, H.E. Lourenço will engage in a bilateral meeting with H.E President Williams Ruto and will also be the Chief Guest at the Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kericho County,” Mudavadi stated in a statement he shared today morning.

But today it turned out that Angolan President who was in the country under Ruto’s invitation, missed the 60th Mashujaa Day Celebrations which he was to grace.

And addressing at the Kericho Green Stadium venue, the Angolan Foreign Minister Tete António explained that the President faced unforeseeable situations that could not allow him to attend.

He however, did not reveal the exact reason this happened but maintained that his boss was closely following the propgramme.

“On behalf of the President, I would first like to convey his apologies. He would have loved to be here but for unforeseen reasons, he could not make it to Kericho but he sent you a warm greeting,” he stated.

Lourenço arrived in the country on Thursday evening alongside his wife, Ana Dias Lourenço.

The first couple were received by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

President William Ruto, on his part, used the opportunity to promise the country an improved health care system under the social protection scheme that will see every citizen access free medical services.
