Monday, September 6, 2021 -Leader of the Guinea coupe’ Col Mamady Doumbouya has said that it is a success story to finally remove President Alpha Conde from power.
“My motive for the takeover is because of rampant corruption, mismanagement and the hardship seen in the country,” he said in a statement after the coupe.
Though he did not say when exactly he wants new government into office, BBC reported that he had indicated that the new union government would be in place in a couple of weeks.
Doumbouya, the leader of the army’s Special Forces unit, further directed that all ministers remain within borders and had to hand over their official cars to the military within 12 hours.
After the meeting with the ministers, he drove around Conakry City where fierce exchange of gun fire took place last Sunday.
The UN, African Union, and regional body ECOWAS have both condemned the coupe and called for a return to civilian rule.
“I strongly condemn any takeover of the government by force of the gun and call for the immediate release of President Alpha Condé,” UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres tweeted.
Reports from the ground say many citizens lauded the coupe’ leader and continued chanting his praises as he drove around Conakry City.
