Wednesday, November 29, 2023 –Central Organization of Trade Union COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli has reminisced his fight with President Willim before elections.
Speaking about his sudden change of heart from the opposition to the ruling wing on Tuesday November 28 during the official opening of the 5th Congress of the ITUC – Africa that is taking place in Nairobi, Kenya, under the theme “Amka Africa”, Atwoli told Ruto that after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC declared him(Ruro) the winner, it was not normal in his life, he contemplated escaping from the country fearing for his safety.
The vocal trade unionist added that he never believed in anything Ruto said or promised Kenyans and wanted Raila Odinga to succeed Uhuru Kenyatta; but luck always pulled towards Ruto both at the IEBC level and at the Supreme Court.
“For so many years, I have been one of your (Ruto’s) greatest critics, who, before your election, I criticized you on every proposal you made to the electorate,” he said.
“But as a true democrat after your election, you said, ‘you guys, come around, let’s sit down’ and we agreed to work together and promote workers and Kenyans’ interests at large. That is a true reflection of a true democratic leader.”
Mr. Atwoli reminisced in length on his past hostility towards the President and his camp before elections.
Atwoli, in the lead-up to the hotly-contested 2022 presidential poll, openly initiated a ‘Stop Ruto Campaign,’ asserting confidently that the then deputy president would not be on the ballot.
So far, Ruto has assimilated him in his government activities including various labour boards to initiate necessary changes for proper service delivery.
Six days ago, Mr. Atwoli was appointed a member of the Social Health Authority.
In a gazette notice dated November 22, 2023, Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha appointed Atwoli, along with Zakayo Kariuki Gichuki and Jacinta Kathamu Mutegi.
The three will be serving as members of the Social Health Authority for a three-year term, starting November 22, 2023.
Atwoli also played part in the selection of the current Director of Public Persecution DPPP Renson Ingonga who succeeded Noordin Haji.
