Monday, April 3, 2023 –Central Organisation of Trade Union COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli has revealed that he did not have any hint on the Ruto-Raila surprising Sunday April 2 truce.
In his reaction just a day after the two top leaders made strides towards each other, the trade unionist has said, though he knew they will meet at some point later on, this remained a top secret just within the two leaders.
“These are experienced leaders who understand Kenyan matters and I cannot act as the advisor of Raila Odinga, I can only be a follower of a political leader. Our president has been through his own political journey.
“Although I did not know of it, I knew there is a point they would meet and talk and I am thankful for what they said yesterday,” Mr.Atwoli added.
Ruto, on Sunday April 2, urged Odinga to call off the ongoing anti-government protests which were set to enter the fourth day on Monday, and instead suggested talks with the opposition through the laid down Parliamentary structures.
Ruto proposed that through a bipartisan Parliamentary process, it will be possible for parties to get their fair share of input into the next electoral body IEBC.
The reconstitution of the new Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC made one of the bone of contestation between the two parties with Odinga warning the president against making the exercise a one-man-show.
In a quick response, Mr. Odinga called off his bi-weekly protests and said the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition is ready for substantive dialogue that will address the key issues they have with them.
He, however, warned that should there be further impediments leading to a collapse of the dialogue, he will return back to the streets for more demonstrations.
