Tuesday, March 28, 2023 –African Union AU Commission Chairperson, Moussa Faki, on Tuesday, March 28, urged both government of Kenya and the opposition to dialogue for the sake of peace.
In a statement sent by the Addis Ababa-based organisation, on Tuesday March 28 noon, the Chairperson decried not only the loss of life but also damage to property and the interruption of economic activities around the country.
He advised leaders from both divides to preach calm through negotiations; saying the clashes witnessed in recent times were not healthy for citizens.
And commenting on the Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC’s conduct in the last general election, Faki mentioned that the exercise was a success after being confirmed by the Supreme Court.
“In this regard, the Chairperson wishes to recall the successful conduct of General Elections in August 2022 in Kenya and the subsequent unanimous confirmation of the election outcome by the Supreme Court.
“The Chairperson reiterates the total solidarity with and support to the Government and the People of Kenya’s efforts working towards national unity, peace and stability in the country,” the statement read in part.
He spoke this after ugly confrontations between the police and the Raila-led opposition camp during the Monday March 20 and Monday March 27 anti-President protests which Azimio Coalition has vowed to continue with unless the IEBC servers are opened for scrutiny.
Sadly, both sides of the political divide have proclaimed a firm stance ruling out the possibility of going into a “handshake” formation like the one former President Uhuru and the opposition leader Raila Odinga entered into in 2018.
