Thursday, June 29, 2023 –Opposition leader Raila Odinga has officially started collecting public signatures meant to force the Kenya Kwanza government to lower the cost of living.
On Wednesday June 28, the Azimio la Umoja coalition launched the signature collection drive; what it termed as a ‘self-determination move’ after the State heard none of their plea to lower the cost of living for poor Kenyans.
Raila and co-principals Martha Karua, Kalonzo Musyoka and Prof Wajackoyah have promised to collect a whopping 1 million signatures from supporters across the country so that to help overturn what the coalition terms as punitive policies by President William Ruto.
And due to that, the coalition started collecting signatures in the Nairobi Central Business District CBD with a view of holding a referendum against the high cost of living.
For instance, on Wednesday June 28, numbers of their supporters were spotted in the CBD signing papers in support of the drive.
“We are requesting your signatures so that we can hit 1 million so that we can fight the high cost of living,” Kenyans were told in a video shared by Raila’s former running mate, Martha Karua.
The opposition believe that, with the 1 million signs, it will be easier to pile pressure on the State to address some of their grievances as high cost of living.
Other items that have gone up in recent times are electricity, fuel, and food stuff which the coalition claims can only come down through less taxation.
On Friday July 7, Azimio will officially announce how other parts of the country will show up to sign for the one million signature initiative.
The coalition is also planning to kickstart their biweekly demonstrations countrywide following the passage of the controversial Finance Bill 2023.
But even as the opposition makes good its threat to save Kenyans from the new taxation laws, government, on the other hand, has promised to implement the new law no matter what.
