Monday, March 20, 2023 –Government reportedly withdrew State security from all Azimio la Umoja leaders protesting in Nairobi.
The MPs allied to the opposition complained that their police had been taken away by the State so that to force them to bow out of the mass action that started today Monday March 20.
Nominated MP Nyakerario Mayaka led press briefing at Parliament building where they accused Inspector General IG of Police, Japhet Koome, of using dirty tactics to punish those opposing the government.
She however remained firm that their supporters will stand with them all week long despite the threats.
“The public will protect us and we will all fight for things that affect Kenyans. Secondly, they stated that when Raila declared that Monday should be a holiday, he should have done a Gazette notice.
“Raila himself is a human Gazette notice. If he says today is a day that we are out there fighting for Kenyans for the things they deserve and we are out there. Let us join hands and fight for this country,” the MP stated.
Senator Edwin Sifuna echoed that the police were using force to disperse demonstrations around the city.
“We have received reports of successful demos in every part of the country. What we want to condemn is the interference of police in the exercise of what is a Constitutional right. Our maandamano was scheduled to be peaceful but we have been assaulted, and arrested,” Sifuna announced.
They were saying this amid running battles between Azimio la Umoja and the police officers within the city’s CBD.
