Saturday, October 19, 2024 –Azimio la Umoja coalition led by Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa have sought explanation for the hurried Gazetting of Pro. Kithure Kindiki as the news Deputy President.
On Citizen Tv, Mr. Wamalwa sought answers as to why the State would hurry in its plans to replace the DP when there was still plenty of time to take each process step-by-step.
The ex-cabinet secretary added that the Constitution of Kenya gives a timeframe of 14 days to install a new deputy in case of anything.
“There is more than meets the eye here, the president has fourteen days, but it took hours, what should have taken 60 days, for parliament to approve is taking hours”.
Mr. Wamalwa went on to question how Prof. Kindiki was nominated yet the Independent and Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was not properly constituted.
The former CS, said the entire process is a legal minefield, since in his view, the law was not followed as it should be.
“The DP nominated by the President must be verified by IEBC and other institutions because he must have the qualifications of a President. How did he get clearance between midnight and this morning? We do not even have an IEBC,” Wamalwa continued.
In the interview, Wamalwa said he did not have a problem with Kindiki as a person and, instead, communicated that he harbored serious reservations about the country sliding to the precipice.
His sentiments come hours after the National Assembly approved Kindiki’s nomination as Kenya’s third Deputy President under the 2010 Constitution following Rigathi Gachagua’s dramatic impeachment.
The Deputy President seat fell vacant after the Senate upheld the National Assembly’s resolution to kick out the embattled Gachagua who has severed ways with his boss, William Ruto.
The National Assembly initiated the impeachment process after Kibwezi West Member of Parliament Mwengi Mutuse tabled an impeachment motion that had in it 11 charges out of which five held substance.
