Saturday, September 16, 2023 –Nairobi gubernatorial hopeful Hon. Paul Ongili or Babu Owino has blasted Governor Johnson Sakaja for running down the county.
In a no-holds-barred attack to the Nairobi boss on Saturday September 16, the Embakasi East lawmaker took issue with the capability of Sakaja to run Nairobi County when he is already ranked number last in the latest opinion poll rankings among governors from the 47 counties.
“Sakaja is an embarrassment to the People of Nairobi. How can you be ranked last out of 47 Counties? Kazi ni Kuiba pesa za Nairobi County and buying Houses in America, London and Dubai,” he made the claims seen by this desk.
Taxes in Nairobi
Owino also took issue with the politician for allegedly increasing taxes for city dwellers without considering their current financial struggles.
“In addition to that he’s increasing taxes to Nairobians. Even dead bodies are now taxed. Nairobi imeisha, Dimples ndio imebaki. Imekataa kuwork,” he quipped.
Latest county rankings put Mr. Sakaja among the worst performing governors with an approval rating of 33.2 per cent, according to a report released by Insight Strategists Solutions ISS Africa.
The report ranked the governors according to two parameters namely; development rating and approval rating.
Sakaja, who is a first-term governor, received a development rating of 33.7 per cent and an approval rating of 33,2 per cent. In both parameters, he maintained the 38th position overall.
Development Record and Ratings
In terms of development record, the three governors who received the highest ranking are Cecily Mbarire (Embu), Irungu Kang’ata (Murang’a) and Abdi Hassan Guyo (Isiolo) who scored 65.4 per cent, 62.8 per cent and 60.2 per cent respectively.
Homa Bay County CEO Gladys Wanga and Nakuru counterpart Susan Kihika followed with 60 per cent and 59.8 per cent, respectively.
The ratings coming at the time Nairobi County residents are expected to pick their next leader among ODM Party’s Tim Wanyonyi who has already announced his bid, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and UDA Party’s Johnson Sakaja who is serving his first term after beating Azimio’s Polycarp Igathe in the last elections.
