Tuesday, November 23, 2021 –A fierce exchange of fire between police and bank robbers lasted for four hours with hostages held inside a Kisumu bank hall.
There was witnessed a long standoff at a commercial bank in the CBD on Tuesday November 23 when the armed robbers made their way into the bank and held occupants hostage.
Police Commander Karanja Muiruri confirmed that the risky operation to stop the heist saw the robbers lob teargas canisters at the cops bringing the whole operations to a sudden standstill for sometime.
“It is not the police who lobbed teargas, it was the robbers who lobbed the teargas at us and we have the sample. We dont know where it comes from, but it is from somewhere,” he noted.
Preliminary investigations showed that the canisters did not belong to the police and police did not quickly establish the number of thugs who were still inside the bank hall.
Residents around the bank were also directed to vacate the area because the operation could culminate into a heavy gunfire exchange and, in the crossfire, casualties could be reported.
By the time of going to the press, the terrifying fire exchange between the cops and the thugs had already lasted for more than three hours.
In a video seen by Homenews.co.ke, police officers are seen busy combing through the crime area with passers-by scampering for their safety amid laud gun blasts.
