Monday, February 27, 2023 –The rise of same sex relationships in the country continues to trigger negative reactions from some quarters.

Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula has joined other influential figures in denouncing the recent Supreme Court verdict on the culture.

This is after the Apex Court, from its decision, regarded the LGBT community as a right to freedom of association.

The Supreme Court judges ruled on Friday that it was discriminatory to deny LGBTQ individuals the ability to register their organisations.

This came after lower courts, in 2013, denied the members’ requests to register Non-Governmental Organizations NGO to advance their rights.

And taking to his social media accounts on February 27, Speaker Moses Wetang’ula claimed that the decision will have “unintended and negative consequences” and will destroy cultural values among the youth.

“Kenya is deeply religious. Each Individual and/or Public institution, including the judiciary, has a duty to uphold, defend and protect public morals!! The SC pronouncement may lead to unintended and unhelpful consequences,” he stated.

CITAM head bishop Calisto Odede, who questioned whether other unlawful practitioners should also be accorded their freedom of association, is among the clergy who have denounced the Supreme Court’s decision.
