In his court application seen by the media, Mr. Sonko wants to get his money back in exchange with other assets as security so that he can come out of his current financial woes.

“I am asking the court to be allowed to deposit security in place of the cash bail to enable me access the money for purposes of attending to my health, paying school fees for my young ones, pay my lawyers and cater for my daily needs and those of my family,” said Sonko.

In the argument, he noted that he has no any other stable source of income after his accounts were frozen by the Assets Recovery Authority ARA over crimes he reportedly committed while serving at Nairobi as the governor.

To persuade the court to allow the refund to take place, Lawyer Philip Kaingu said Sonko is a safe person who cannot abscond court directives to stand trial to its faithful conclusion.

“The graft cases against him have proceeded well with more than 10 witnesses which means there is no risk of him absconding court. It is in the interest that he be allowed to substitute the cash bail to enable him fend for his family,” remarked Kaingu.

The ex-governor averred in his affidavit that, out of the sh 15 million, he only raised 5 million while the rest was a donation from friends and family members. He was saying this to demystify the myth that the sh 10 million was paid by Nairobi Deputy Governor Anne Kananu whom he said only acted as a treasurer who helped mobilize for the funds drive.

Sonko was on December 2020 charged with conspiracy to defraud public funds through a series of multi-million kickbacks that amounted to sh 39 million from tender-preneurs in county government.
