Monday September 13, 2021 -A storey building under construction has collapsed at Mamboleo Kisumu County today afternoon.
Standard Digital indicated that seven persons had been rescued while scores were still under the rubble at the site.
Reports which reached our Homenews.co.ke desk indicated that a mother who was serving food at the site is among those trapped in the rubble even as rescue mission kicked off to save more lives.
The publication also added that Joseph Okeyo, a worker who survived the ordeal, had said that the accident caught everybody unawares.
“We did not anticipate what happened. We just heard a cracking sound and then the building collapsed.
“We were having lunch on site and I had just left her serving my colleagues before the incident happened,” he revealed.
By 2PM, an excavator was yet to arrive at the scene as firefighters and other rescue workers from Kisumu County struggled to cut through the rubble.
Institute of Quantity Surveyors of Kenya IQSK reported that, many developers use unlicensed engineers on their projects to cut on costs.
“The leaning five-story structure in Kinoo might have been averted if thorough compliance had been observed,” said IQSK president James Munene in reference to another incident in Kinoo Nairobi.
He warned that fake engineers had sprouted in the country and cautioned developers against engaging such services at the expense of their workers’ safety.
“Equally, we all know what is at stake are human lives and loss of wealth. We need to get our act together,” he said.
Background check from IQSK showed that the earliest case of a building to collapse in the country dates back in 1990 when a multi-storyed structure collapsed in Dagoretti area claiming one life living scores injured.
