Saturday, September 17, 2022 –Pressure continues to mount on Moses Wetang’ula to resign from his position of Ford Kenya Party leader.
A number of his own party members claim that for him to play the role of Speaker in the National Assembly impartially, he should pave way for a fresh leader in his Ford Kenya Party.
He now ought to focus on managing House proceedings without looking back at his party if at all he wants to be taken serious in his new role.
“It will be hard to trust him at the Parliament because of his affiliation with Ford Kenya. He must relinquish the latter,” a party member asserted.
And reacting on the same, renowned Constitutional lawyer Charles Kanjama advised that it is fair that he resigns from the party position for some time so that to be trusted at the top. That running the two positions causes ‘conflict of interest’ even though he is a member of Kenya Kwanza.
“If members are not happy a dispute resolution committee will be formed to address the issue.
“Second, look into the Constitution and Election Act. Appointed State officers are not allowed to hold a seat in party leadership. While elected state officers are allowed to hold seats in political parties,” Lawyer Kanjama told a local news channel.
Wetang’ula was recently elected as the new National Assembly speaker where he beat his rival from Azimio la Umoja, Kenneth Marende with 85 votes.
Wetang’ula managed to attract 215 votes ahead of Marende who managed only 130 votes; what saw the House plan to go into a second round where the winner with a simple majority was going to be deeclared.
However, sensing defeat, Mr. Marende would bolt out of the race.
