Channel BBI Funds to Fighting Covid-19, ODM Makes U-turn

Tuesday, March 30, 2021 -Orange team could be moving out of the now nuisance topic of BBI claiming it is nolonger a priority.

The first to throw the spanner in the works is Orange Democratic Movement ODM Deputy Party leader Wycliffe Oparanya who on Tuesday March 30 afternoon revealed that any plans for a Referendum should now be pushed to next year due to Covid-19 pandemic.

The Kakamega Governor observed that the current biting economic condition cannot allow more burden on Kenyans.

“If there is no money at the National Treasury, there is no need of pushing to have the Referendum this year. We should plan to hold the referendum next year when our economy has stabilized and Covid-19 contained,” Oparanya said.

His sentiments came just hours after their Secretary General Edwin Sifuna mentioned on live Citizen Tv that any funds meant for BBI should, from today, be redirected to combating the Coronavirus so that Kenyans can resume their normal daily lives.

“Kenyans are tired of consultations & stories, even if we do not have our own original ideas, copy what others are doing in the world. There is no money spent on BBI, but if there is a single shilling that was going into BBI we can use it to buy vaccines,” Sifuna said while appearing on Citizen TV’s Day Break.

The two statements from the ODM Party now signals a new twist to BBI and the subsequent calls for a Referendum what might change the political arithmetic growing forward.

Sources pointed at mistrust arising from BBI boardroom meetings which could be threatening to tear apart the once popular brainchild of both Hon. Raila Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta.
