Tuesday, January 31, 2023 –Former electoral body Chairman Wafula Chebukati has issued a one week ultimatum to Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga over video claims.
The former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC boss, while reacting on the claims made by Odinga during the recent Azimio la Umoja rallies, wants Raila to set the record straight by producing the purported CCTV footage showing three IEBC commissioners at his home a day before presidential election results were announced.
Chebukati’s Demand Notice addressed to Mr. Odonga requires him(the former premier) to produce the purported CCTV footage capturing the the chairman and two commissioners at his Karen residence.
The ex-IEBC boss wants this video and photos in a record seven days; failure to which he takes further action against the opposition leader.
Chebukati’s lawyers’ Saroni and Stevens Advocates confirmed that the said demand letter had already been served to the defendant.
“Further, our Client is aggrieved that you took no caution or responsibility while making the adverse remarks with the consequence that our Client has suffered and continues to suffer serious reputational injury, taking into account his status and position as former Chairman of IEBC,” the statement read partly.
During the highly charged up Sunday January 29 Jacaranda rally, a daring Odinga claimed that Chebukati and ex-commissioners Boya Molu, and Abdi Guliye visited his house asking to be bribed millions so that to tilt election results in his favour.
Odinga further used the opportunity to fire a warning shot at President Ruto’s ‘illegitimate’ regime which he promised never to recognize.
