Monday, March 6, 2023 –Nairobi’s multi-million shopping mall, China Square, has today resumed operations after a week of closure.
On Monday, March 6, the management released a statement that the shop owners had resolved all outstanding issues with authorities and that it was back to normal activities.
“Yes we have resumed today,” affirmed the shopping outlet on Monday.
The Kenya China Chamber of Commerce KCCC would welcome the move by the Kenyan Government to allow the Chinese traders to resume office.
“We welcome the good news on the resumption of operations of China Square. This follows several engagements between the Kenya Government and the Chinese Community in Kenya to reach an amicable solution to the stalemate,” the Chinese Chamber of Commerce KCCC stated.
This commercial group termed the support the governments of Kenya was offering them as positive efforts towards the China-Kenya relationship.
“Chinese businesses will contribute to Kenya’s growth and development efforts through employment creation and contribution to Kenya’s tax revenue,” the statement added.
China Square was forced to shut down a few days ago after a section of local traders accused it of subjecting them to an unfair competition with Chinese products.
The traders would then pour on the streets demanding that the owners be asked to close business if they cannot stick to production license guidelines.
Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria, on his part, would quickly reveal that China Square is not licensed to offer retail services but to manufacture and distribute.
