Tuesday, February 28, 2023 –Chief Justice Martha Koome has exposed President William Ruto’s government barely three months after it pledged to sufficiently fund the Judiciary.
About four months ago, President Ruto promised Koome a whopping sh 3 billion support to the Judiciary but this pledge, according to the CJ, has not been implemented.
Speaking in Meru County on Monday, February 27, CJ Koome reminded the president to walk the talk and deliver the promise so that the Judiciary can move on with its normal activities most of which have stalled.
“We are climbing a mountain as a Judiciary and we are here at the bottom. With the support of everybody, including the President who pledged that all he can do is strengthen the judiciary by giving us whatever is required for us to enhance our operations” she said.
She went on to claim that the Judiciary remains neglected now decades with some officers working in dirty environments what makes it hard to meet their official targets.
Ms. Koome attributed her complaints to the low pace at which Meru Court was being constructed and implored to get involved so that the project can be completed this year.
President William Ruto, on November 4, last year, said the sh 3 billion budget will help construct the necessary infrastructure needed.
“We have committed to increasing it (budget) by sh 3 billion to make sure we also hire the requisite number of staff and build ICT facilities so that the Judiciary can deliver its mandate,” he said.
Ruto spoke during the launch of the Annual State of the Judiciary Report on a Friday. The report named insufficient funding as one of the focus areas.
