- COTU Should Introduce a Term Limit for Officials. The Current Trend Doesn’t Look Good - March 14, 2025
Central Organization of Trade Union COTU should improve its Constitution.
I am not sure which international umbrella COTU operates under because the idea that officials can overstay in office the way I see in Kenya does not make sense.
For instance, the current secretary general Francis Atwoli has remained in office for over 15 years in the guise of having been re-elected. I even guess he has been SG now 20 years.
This kind of democracy is annoying. Doesn’t look good. If it is all about re-election, Mr. Atwoli will still be re-elected because of his deep pockets. No other person in COTU can beat Mr. Atwoli with money. Money matters in any election especially in Africa. And Atwoli will still be re-elected should the Constitution remain as it is.
Why can’t the laws in COTU be revised so that those with money like Atwoli can suddenly be cut short by a term limit. A term limit of three years is enough.
The culture of leaving officials in office as long as they can be elected is wrong. No wonder Mr. Atwoli recently asked Ruto to also remain in power forever. The arrogance is open.
And it goes without saying that, the amount of wealth Atwoli has amassed from that position is more than enough. He is filthy rich and old. Time to relax home with his grandchildren.
At a certain age, African leaders should learn to spare some time for their families and relatives. You can’t serve in office until you drop dry.
