Tuesday, August 22, 2023 –Embattled Coastal Pastor Ezekiel Odero has secured fresh court orders barring the Registrar of Societies against de-registering his church.
Through his lawyer Danstan Omari, Odero on Monday August 21, at the High Court, asked for orders which he was granted.
Homenews.co.ke learnt that the clergy filed a new application on Monday and resorted to withdrawing the earlier version which he had filed earlier.
And on that, the presiding judge issued the reprieve orders in a bid to interrogate whether the process leading to the de-registration was consistent with the laws surrounding societies in Kenya.
“Upon perusal of material placed before the court in support of the application, I am persuaded to exercise my discretion and allow the applicants to challenge the gazette notice dated August 18, 2023, whose purport is to deregister the society referred to as New Life Prayer Center and Church,” Justice Jairus Ngaah stated.
Odero’s New life Prayer Center and Church was among the five Kenyan churches which were de-listed from the Registrar of Societies over their questionable activities in the country.
According to Notice by the Registrar of Societies dated on Thursday, the state also de-registered Bishop Thomas Wahome’s Helicopter of Christ Church and Paul Mackenzie’s Kilifi Good News International Church
Others are Theophilus Church in Nairobi and Kings Outreach Church.
“The churches stood deregistered as of May 19, 2023,” the registrar announced.
Mackenzie, a cult leader, is alleged to have forced his supporters to fast to death in order to meet Jesus. Hundreds of bodies have since been recovered from a vast swathe of land linked to him in Shakahola, Kilifi County.
Since his arrest, the pastor, despite decrying of injustice, has remained under the police custody now four months.
