Friday, November 25, 2022 –New Public Service, Gender and Affirmative Action cabinet secretary Aisha Jumwa has overturned Fred Matiang’i’s orders banning night discos in Kilifi County.

Matiang’i banned night discos commonly called disco matanga to save teenagers from increased early pregnancies as well as drug abuse.

The former cabinet secretary activated the ban in the year 2019 after more than 17,000 cases of teenage pregnancies were reported in the country.

Jumwa, who was speaking at Water Grounds in Kilifi, however, reasoned that the ban had negatively affected the disco business in Kilifi County and across the country.

“We promised to uplift small businesses and not kill them. The ban has deprived many people of their livelihoods hence I lift the ban on disco matanga. Minors should not be allowed in these functions. Police should arrest those who are found attending the functions,” she said.

She, therefore, instructed local authorities to deal with negligence among parents who leave their school-going children to loiter around the night discos.

“As a parent, you should always know where your child is. When the child leaves home for these functions where is the parent? Do not abscond your duties and allow your child to roam around then you blame disco matanga,” added Jumwa.

She argued that, if a few arrests are well dealt with, then this matter will be settled once and for all.
