Tuesday, July 13, 2021 -Details on Raila Odinga’s recent trip to United Arab Emirates UAE have started to leak out gradually as sources link it to campaign funding.
The Star issue of Tuesday July 13 has cited Odinga’s insiders who have reportedly confirmed that the former premier, just like the rest of his rivals in politics, is out in Dubai to amass formidable financial war chest ahead of 2022 presidential duel.
In Odinga’s company is MP Junet Mohamed who has luckily emerged as the most trusted Odinga’s right hand man-cum-adviser.
“They were to leave together but Tinga [Raila] had been invited to Ukambani to accompany the President,” a source familiar with the happenings divulged.
Just like Odinga, DP William Ruto has also been out and about meeting tycoons in his bid to strengthen his financial muscles in readiness for the big duel. Notably he has been in Sudan, Turky and recently Uganda.
But even as speculations about the opposition honcho continues to rise, his long time personal spokesperson Dennis Onyango downplayed the rumour saying his boss was in Dubai in his capacity as an African Union AU Special Envoy.
“He (Raila) was to meet some guys who had shown interest in this thing he has been pushing called African Infrastructure Fund, so he has potential people who had requested to meet him. That is why he is there,” Onyango said on the phone.
Odinga was appointed in this capacity in 2018, a role he secured after he shook hands with his erstwhile-nemesis-turned-ally Uhuru Kenyatta.
The hunt for fiscal armor underscores the high stake in the next presidential race which, according to pundits, could be one of the most expensive in the history of the country owing to fact that Odinga is doing his very last bid while, on the other hand, DP William Ruto wants to become the next leader now that he believes there is no any other government position left for him. He also wants to prove wrong his boss Uhuru Kenyatta.
