Saturday, September 9, 2023 –Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has asked the Kalenjin Community not to betray his community after they supported President William Ruto to win power in the August 9 election.
Speaking in Kericho County over the weekend where he had gone to mourn with the family of area MP Hon. Joseph Cherorot, the DP urged the Kalenjin community to be careful not to break the bond that was almost breaking down during the Uhuru Kenyatta era.
He added that Kikuyu community heeded his advice and decided to throw their weight and votes behind President William Ruto who, by then, had been sidelined by Uhuru Kenyatta.
“Many of you had doubts that people from the Mountain will support and vote Ruto into office. Because of the past history.
“In our place, we speak and plan at night as real Mau Mau worriers used to do; the other camp in Azimio was busy drinking the same nights,” he quipped.
He added that the reason they voted Ruto into Statehouse was because he had mingled with Kikuyus and supported them in kind and cash and there was no reason not to vote him.
But he added that what Kikuyus do no like is betrayal and that, should it happen, that will be the birth of hatred between the two communities again.
“We are Christians and we are truthful people. What we hate is betrayal. Despite being our son, we rejected Uhuru because he had betrayed his deputy and, therefore, we hope there will be no repeat of such amongst us,” he added.
The second in command was speaking this just days after he scolded opposition leader Raila Odinga during a local burial in Mt Kenya.
He told Odinga in the face that Mt Kenya people fear him most because of his history of entering into Handshakes to destabilize governments.
The fire-breathing Gachagua accused the Azimio boss of having misled the then President Uhuru Kenyatta during his second term in office.
In response, Odinga told him that the Bomas of Kenya talks were significant in shaping the democracy of this nation and that it had nothing to do with joining Kenya Kwanza administration.
The DP was addressing mourners in Kipkelion East Constituency, Kericho County where he condoled with the family of area MP Hon. Joseph Cherorot on losing his son, Wakili Vincent Kipkoech Mutai.
