Sunday, April 9, 2023 –Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Twitter account has lost the blue verification badge.
With over 500,000 followers around the country, the deputy president has managed to garner himself a massive following after joining the platform at the height of the last general election.
Most of his following being from the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition who believed in the William Ruto-Gachagua ideologies.
Gachagua had verified-blue his handle a few months ago indicating that he was a notable public figure in Kenya and Africa.
Among other public figures in the society who, initially, were easily getting verified by Twitter include journalists, entertainers, actors, government official and top businessmen and women.
The last year taking over of Twitter company by Elon Musk changed this plan and one has now to pay atleast $7 every month to retain the blue mark.
“Starting April 1, we’ll be winding down our legacy Verification program and accounts that were verified under the previous criteria (active, notable, and authentic) will not retain a blue checkmark unless they are subscribed to Twitter Blue. Subscribers will need to meet our eligibility criteria to receive or retain the blue checkmark,” Twitter said in a blog post.
Twitter would, therefore, wound down the legacy verification program, beginning to remove verification ticks from the accounts regardless of the status of the individual; meaning the programme would require a monthly subscription fee.
To qualify for the status checkmark, the account must be clean, in operation for atleast 30 days and a confirmed phone number.
