DP Gachagua, Orengo Clash Over Finance Bill

Sunday, June 4, 2023 –Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has maintained that their Finance Bill 2023 will carry the day at the House during its debating session.

Addressing this during a fundraiser event held  at St Charles Lwanga Secondary School in Kitui on Saturday June 3, the DP warned those MPs plotting to stop the exercise saying the opposition had no numbers to stop anything in the Parliament, sadly.

“I am a person who speaks the truth; people must give taxes to finance our capital and recurrent expenditure… there was a call to recruit more teachers, who will pay for this? I can’t pay for it with my Ksh1 million salary… that money will be gotten from the citizens” he said.

He took issue with the opposition boss Raila Odinga for being a man of conflicting stands as he purports to advocate for Kenya’s rights and, on the other hand, fighting good laws and plans by their government.

“Even if you make noise and put sufurias on your head, even if you reject the bill, thinking it won’t pass, you don’t have the numbers and that’s the truth, there’s no need.

“Have one stand as a true leader who means well for the country. You can’t say you are advocating for people’s plight while at the same time going to the streets to destroy their businesses,” he added.

Elsewhere, Siaya Governor James Orengo has started a campaign against the Finance Bill 2023 by asking legislators not to abandon their people during the debate.

“Kenyans who donated power to the MPS are pressed up with the many taxations and they are waiting to see if those they entrusted with positions abandon them during the hour of need,” he said.

He added that this is the time they have to demonstrate their power by rejecting in totality the Bill which seeks to overtax the poor.

Already Orange Democratic Movement ODM Party and Azimio leadership has released a statement asking the government to stop the whole exercise until consultation are exhausted.
