Friday, September 29, 2023 –Former dissenting IEBC Commissioners led by Juliana Cherera have maintained that the last year’s presidential general election was not credible.

Juliana Cherera, Irene Masit, Justus Nyang’aya, and Francis Wanderi who all gave a dissenting opinion and contested the results as announced by Chairman Chebukati, have told the National Dialogue Committee NADC sitting at the Bomas that what Chebukati announced was not true.

“The big screen streaming results was shut down and numbers changed. I tried to question but I couldn’t go far with it,” Juliana said in the sitting.

Cherera whereabouts after election

On their whereabouts after the controversy, Juliana and Marsit stated that they had to leave the country at night and in high secrete so that to save themselves from death threats at the time.

“My last born is 7 years old. It was bad even in school. Our social life really changed. It was bad for my children and my family. There are certain things we cannot say on camera because it is not a safe space,” Cherera submitted.

Ms Irene Masit, who hails from Rift Valley, on her part, said she had to go into exile after receiving open death threats following her stand on the election.

“The second threat was at night. I took a motorbike to the airport and I was the last one to the manifest. I did not report to the police because I was leaving the country,” Ms Masit explained.

In the Thursday September 29 Bomas session, there was witnessed an ugly moment when the elections topic became the focus.

Azimio seeks answers about Chebukati

Azimio’s wing took issue with the former IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati who refused to show up even as fellow IEBC commissioners Juliana Cherera and Iren Marsit showed up.

Former Defence Cabinet Secretary CS Eugene Wamlwa had a verbal exchange with a section of the Kenya Kwanza representees before he walked out in anger.

“We were hoping Chebukati would be here and he has denied the country to hear the story from both sides, the arrogance in his letter is something we will deal with,’’ he noted.

This is after Chebukati, Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu snubbed the sitting despite having been summoned to make an appearance to shed more light on what exactly transpired and how they came up with the Bomas figures that landed William Ruto into the Statehouse.

“To participate would be to betray IEBC staff who were tortured, murdered, and a reward for impunity. Instead, a Commission of Inquiry should be formed,” Chebukati said in his statement on Thursday September 28.

Chebukati’s side was, however, defended by the Kenya Kwanza side led by co-chair and Majority leader in the National Assembly Kimani Ichungw’ah who countered the accusations raised against the IEBC by asking firm questions.

Apart from poking holes into Cherera’s account of things, he also sought to know their political stand in the country.
