Friday, November 24, 2023 –About eight persons who were part of the Rachel Ruto Anniversary of the Joyful Women Organization JYWO at Kasarani on Thursday November 22 have passed on.

The incident was officially confirmed by the Red Cross officials in Makueni County.

The Red Cross reported that this happened when a local river flooded drowning them away in the car they were traveling.

They were attempting to cross over a swollen river Muooni on their way from Kavuthu to Mutyambua.

“Yes, the guests were from the event organised by the First Lady. It is so sad to report that some of the deceased were relatives,” the correspondent stated.

A witness said to reporters that the eight were not on the bus at the time of the accident as the driver had refused to ferry them across the swelling river.

They were also, reportedly, warned by residents but they went on to risk their lives in the incident that has since captured the attention of the whole country.

“Witnesses say seven people died. We are trying to ascertain the exact number. They were sitting on a log floating in the middle of the river after being overwhelmed by the raging waters as they tried to cross.

“A sudden swelling of the river swept them away as a crowd of witnesses looked on helplessly,” Area chief Norman Musyoki told local media stations, adding that they had warned residents against crossing the river, one of the most dangerous, during the El Nino season.

Emergency service providers were deployed to the accident scene to kickstart the process of retrieving the bodies, but so far, only two bodies have been retrieved from the flooded river.

President Ruto also attended the Kasarani event before flying out of the country to Tanzania where he is representing Kenya in a continental forum.
