Thursday, September 16, 2021 -Former Cabinet Secretary for Sports Hassan Wario has been freed after settling the sh 3.6 million he was fined by court today
Him and another co-convict had been sentenced for 6 and 12 years jail term respectively if they failed to settle their fines; in a judgment issued today in court.
The duo were facing a sh 42 million scandal of 2016 Olympic Games held in Brazil and which incriminated the two officials in cash embezzlement.
Wario and the Head of Mission Rio Olympic Games Stephen Soi made their appearance before the Nairobi anti-corruption Court chief Magistrate Elizabeth Juma who convicted them on the grounds of compelling fraud evidence produced in court.
“They took advantage of their offices to include strange people in the Kenyan delegation to Brazil and paid them allowances which caused the loss of taxpayers’ money. I find them guilty as charged and convict them accordingly,” ruled Juma.
According to the Standard Digital, the magistrate found Wario guilty of all the three counts of abuse of office in which the charges stated that he used his position to improperly confer a benefit to Adan Omar, Richard Abura and Monica Sairo by including them into the Rio 2016 Olympic Games Kenyan delegation against the procedures.
“He took advantage of his office to have people included in Team Kenya and paid them allowances from public funds. Nothing prevented him from introducing the people earlier to the steering committee if he wanted them to be part of the team instead of taking the arbitrary action,” Magistrate Elizabeth ruled.
After the ruling Wario shortly retreated and when he returned to the dock, he had settled the sh 3.6 million securing him his freedom even as his co-convict Mr. Soi remained behind after failing to raise the sh 103 million he was fined.
Their case has been dragging in Court since 2016.
