Sunday, October 1, 2023 –Faith Kipyegon has suffered her first defeat on the international stage days after her stunning 1500m/5000m double victory in Budapest.
She lost the women’s mile at the inaugural World Road Running Championships in Riga, Latvia, after finishing third.
The prolific athlete ‘Kipyegon’ was eyeing her fourth world record following her spree of wins this season.
In 2023 alone, she has broken three world records and secured two world titles, putting firmly on the map and solidifying her place in the record books as one of the greatest athletes ever.
Now in the Women’s Mile, beating her was Ethiopian Diribe Welteji, who clinched the Women’s Road Mile title after clocking 4:21.00 while Kipyegon clocked 4:24:13.
“Ethiopia’s Diribe Welteji blazes to a 4:21.00 world record to grab a surprise gold in the women’s to-road mile,” World Athletics website confirmed.
Before Sunday’s race, the Road Mile’s world record was held by American Nikki Hiltz.
