Friday, April 10, 2024 –Scores of victims have been trapped inside a building earmarked for demolition in Kanduyi, Bungoma County.
Our sources from the ground have reported that, quite a number of locals are trapped in the building at Kanduyi Market in Bungoma County after the structure, which was initially half-demolished, collapsed today.
The building was partially demolished last weekend as part of the expansion and renovation of Masinde Muliro Stadium for this year’s Madaraka Day Celebrations.
A news outlet, on Friday noon, reported that those trapped inside were reportedly harvesting steel irons for commercial purposes.
“These people had been warned against approaching the building, but they failed to heed the instructions,” Emmanuel Sikuku, an eyewitness, stated as quoted by the Star.
This is happening amid public uproar over substandard structures that do not meet required levels erected in many towns and which continue to be washes away by raging floods.
Many families have been rendered homeless as floods in Nairobi sweep away permanent homes put up by investors and landlords.
Most hit areas include slums, Athi River areas where apartments are erected by investors who bought plots there when the weather was okay.
Wealthy estates of Runda along Kiambu Road as well as parts of Syokimau have also been rendered uninhabitable by the flash floods.
Government has since confirmed that, by yesterday Thursday May 9, death toll from floods was 257 persons.
