Thursday, October 24, 2024 –Foreign powers have started piling pressure on President William Ruto to reconstitute the Independent Electoral Commission IEBC.
In a subtle warning to the State, on Wednesday October 24, the U.S government indicated its concern on the state of affairs in the country saying, this direction is undemocratic and could compromise democracy and peace.
“IEBC’s ability to support democracy in Kenya is at risk without recruiting commissioners or parliamentary action to provide IEBC funding for voter registration. by-elections and other activities,” the US Embassy said.
One and half years now, the IEBC has continued its operations without a chairman and commissioners; something that the U.S points out as a precipitate for fracas.
After the 2022 general election, Choirman Wafula Chebukati took a break as his term had come to an end. Samely, commissioners (Cherera 4) who had issues with the elections, took off citing lack of transparency.
Kenyawide.com can authoritatively report that some areas in the country are going without an MP in place because the IEBC is yet to be formed.
Among these areas is Banisa Constituency in Mandera County which has been without an MP since March 2023 following the passing on of its Member of Parliament, Hassan Kullow.
IEBC’s functions were paralysed in 2023 after three of its commissioners- Abdi Guliye, Boya Molu and Chairman Wafula Chebukati retired from office.
This left only the CEO, whose mandate is strictly limited to supervising and performing secretariat duties.
Days ago, Court handed the opposition greenlight to have a representative in the selection panel of the new commissioners.
This being among the contentious issues that the opposition and the State differed on for a long time.
