Friday, August 11, 2023 –Armed robbers shot dead a senior police officer working with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations DCI Makadara Nairobi on Wednesday August 9.
The gunmen made their trap smooth by waiting for the car of the DCI officer to stall on a Kayole Road before shooting him dead in the presence of his wife, Hellen Kemuntho.
Identified as Constable David Mayaka, he was accosted while driving home together with wife at around 10PM when the killers, who were on a motorbike, stopped next to his saloon car at Mihango Area and opened fire directly at him.
A source told this writer that the diseased officer was caught unprepared before being shot in the abdomen at close range, killing him right away.
Police report indicated that Mayaka was changing his car’s flat tyre when he was attacked in the dark by the gunmen.
His wife, Hellen Kemuntho, was looking on helplessly when this heinous incident took place. She would also be left shot in her leg as she shouted for any help from residents.
“Help me pleased come help me please I am injured rush me to hospital,” she pleaded as residents flocked the scene.
This whole exercise was clearly captured on nearby CCTV Surveillance systems mounted around the area.
While making this confirmation, Nairobi Police boss Adamson Bungei noted that the gang of three men lowered Mayaka’s guard by purporting to have come to assist him fix the broken car only to pump bullets into his body.
“The gang jumped onto their motorcycle (whose license plates had been obscured) and one of them opened fire shooting the officer in the abdomen,” said the DCI.
“When police arrived at the scene, they found the bloodied and visibly distraught Kemuntho in tears and rushed her to a nearby hospital for treatment,” Bungei stated.
The diseased attempted to rush inside his car to retrieve his firearm but it was a case of too late as the gunmen sprayed more fire into him.
Mayaka’s body was then moved to a local mortuary for storage pending postmortem as the injured wife continued receiving treatment where she is stabilizing.
