Monday, February 15, 2021 – Garissa Senator Mohammed Yusuf Haji has died. Family has made an official confirmation.

Before his demise, Mr. Haji was the Chairman of the Building Bridges Initiative BBI Taskforce, a brainchild of former Premier Raila Odinga and his friend Uhuru Kenyatta.

“Mzee has rested, he passed on this morning at the Aga Khan Hospital,” a family member said.

According the family spokesperson, the late was out in Turkey where he had been flown for a specialized treatment but returned on Sunday after he showed an improvement in his health.

Haji who has died at 80, suffered multiple organ failure on Monday morning what then led to his death.

Senator Haji, father to the Directorate of Public Prosecution DPP, served for long as a provincial administrator and Cabinet Minister.

Mourning the late, President Uhuru Kenyatta termed him a trustworthy public servant who anyone would depend upon for any job. Uhuru added that the late Haji was a patriotic citizen who has left behind an indelible mark.

“It is very unfortunate that we have lost such a dependable, solid and highly accomplished Kenyan leader,” the president said in a message of condolence to the family.

“Mzee Haji was a highly respected leader and elder whose wisdom, deep knowledge of the Kenyan society and long experience as a public administrator enabled him to serve the country in various leadership roles with distinction for many years,” the President said.

Kenyatta also outlined that Mzee Haji’s death was a big blow to the country especially in the ongoing Building Bridges Initiative BBI constitutional reform process.

“Mzee Haji was a steward of the BBI process and a strong pillar of our desire to construct a cohesive, peaceful and more progressive Kenyan nation. His stewardship of the initiative shall be missed,” the President further eulogized.

He will be buried at the Lang’ata Muslim Cemetery later on Monday.
