Friday, June 23, 2023 –Kenya African National Union KANU chairman, Gideon Moi, has asked President William Ruto to allow put in place robust mechanisms to protect collected taxes from leaking out through corruption.
While supporting the proposed Finance Bill 2023, Gideon noted that any questionable loopholes must also be addressed this early before the taxes are collected.
“Moving forward, the government should prioritise establishing transparent and accountable systems to seal avenues of corruption to ensure taxes are utilised as appropriated.
“To effectively tackle this issue, we must vigorously promote the country’s economic growth, elevate labor incomes, and push more people from the fringes of the economy into the mainstream formal sector,” Moi advised Ruto.
He added that he cannot afford to reject the housing programme when its intentions are good for the millions of poor Kenyans.
The Moi son also backed the proposed affordable housing levy and other projects meant to uplift the living standards of the poor in the slums.
“In the case of the National Housing Development Fund, swift action is required to institute a robust legal, policy, and administrative framework that will govern the management and administration of the fund to ringfence it for its sole primary purpose, the construction of affordable houses for the people of Kenya.
“We reiterate that addressing the proliferation of informal settlements requires a comprehensive approach that goes beyond affordable housing initiatives,” Mr. Moi stated.
On that note, he counseled the regime to try as much as possible to make the country an investment friendly place through appropriate taxation rates.
Gideon now joins the likes of Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris who has fully backed the William Ruto’s Housing project through the amendments in the Finance Bill 2023.
Passaris is among the Azimio la Umoja members who voted yes to the Bill against the wishes of the party boss.
