Wednesday, April 19, 2023 –Friday April 21 has been declared a national public holiday by the Interior Ministry in an announcement made today Wednesday April 19.

Interior Cabinet Secretary, Prof Kithure Kindiki, through a Gazette Notice, declared Friday, April 21, a public holiday to mark the Islamic Idd-ul-Fitr.

CS Kindiki indicated that the day would be reserved for the Muslim faithful to celebrate the end of their fasting Ramadan.

Idd-ul-Fitr is a festival of breaking the fast and marks the end of the month-long fasting by Muslims during Ramadan.

“It is notified for the general information of the public that the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holiday Act, declares Monday 21 April 2023 shall be a public holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr,” the Gazette notice read in part.

Though the exact date of Idd varies across the globe, the announcement of the holiday follows Muslim beliefs, which depend on the sighting of the moon.
