Saturday, February 17, 2024 –The President has officially started putting into place a strong campaign machinery to spearhead Raila Odinga’s African Union AU chair bid.
Kenyawide.com has learnt that the committee and the entire team will be fully funded by Kenyan taxes as government seeks to make sure the opposition boss clinches the plum continental seat.
The team, according to Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, will comprise members from both government and the opposition.
It has emerged that President William Ruto, together with Musalia Mudavadi in his capacity as the foreign CS, both have been lobbying for Raila’s AU job candidature across the globe.
Speaking in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia on Friday February 16, PCS and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Mr. Mudavadi made it clear that East Africa must have AU chair come from their region.
“The Central, Southern and Western Africa regions have had their share since 2002, so it is now time for the Eastern and Northern Africa regions. Under the rotational rules, Eastern Africa has the first opportunity when the term of the current chair expires end of this year,” PCS Mudavadi said.
Support for Raila has come from both ends – the opposition and government – as Azimio la Umoja brigade held a press-briefing where they supported Odinga’s continental bid.
“We fully support his decision, and we shall back his candidature to our fullest capacity,” Kalonzo Musyoka read the statement on behalf of the team.
Present in the meeting was Narc-kenya’s Martha Karua, Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-Kenya’s Eugene Wamalwa, Roots Party boss Prof. George Wajackoyah, former Ndaragwa Member of Parliament Jeremiah Kioni among others.
Odinga has already received support from ex-Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo who ,on Thursday, February 15, endorsed him as the best fit for the job.
AU must have its new chairman by next year who will replace the incumbent Moussa Faki Mahamat set to retire after serving his full two terms.
The term runs for four years renewable, once.
