Monday, June 27, 2022 –Government has faulted Roots Party boss George Wajackoyah for misleading the youth in the name of campaigns.
First to react to calls from Prof Wajackoyah’s manifesto that cannabis should be legalised in the county, is Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i who on Sunday, June 26, said government will not just sit pretty comfortable and wait to see politicians destroy youth through misinformation.
He warned that anyone found with the banned drug will not be spared as law requires because it is the duty of any government to make sure there is sanity around the country.
“Regrettably, we have also observed leaders mobilising the youth through misinformation and false promises such as legalization of cannabis for commercial and recreational purposes if they are elected to office,”
“They have even cited countries that have legalised cannabis for recreational purposes without providing factual information on controls that have been put in place where such legalization has been allowed,” the CS stated.
Matiang’i also showed concerns following reports of increased cases of drug abuse among teenagers; some who have left school due to the drug addiction.
The CS further maintained that the drug will remain completely banned in the country with stiff penalties to those found peddling.
“Cannabis remains a controlled substance with very clear penalties. Nobody should be led to violate Narcotic Drugs, Psychotropic Substances Control Act and any other legalization in drug control. These laws remain in place and they are going to be observed,” he added.
Latest data from the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse NACADA shows that levels of drug abuse had gone up with a corresponding teenage risk destruction.
