Heads on the spot for registering 500K nonexistent learners on Free Programme

Rogue Head teachers have registered an extra 500,000 nonexistent students on the Free Primary Education Programme with an aim of looting the extra amount. Ministry of Education has confirmed.

Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha revealed the heartbreaking news adding that the number had been sexed up from 8.47 million to 9 million

“This management approach has been instrumental in identifying lapses within the Ministry where public funds have been misappropriated and measures to ensure that effective intervention has been deployed,” said Magoha.

The CS however failed to reveal the exact loss in Kenyans shilling saying the length  the scam has been running cannot be accurately estimated.

In its free programme for Kenyan learners, the State allocated sh 1,420 per student in a programme that was initiated by former President Mwai Kibaki.

To make it worse, it was found out that tax payers have been losing a lot of money due to inconsistent data through the Central Books Procurement Programme CBPP. Some schools have been supplied with excessive books as others remained struggling with few supplies.

Moreover, there has been instances where some rural schools would delay getting the books in time and when they do it is done in few numbers that cannot serve the population as indicated in official data base captured by the ministry.

To add salt to the injury, there is still another new scandal in the Ministry where sh 1.9 billion had been misused through desk projects.

“I tasked one of the units in the Ministry to develop and cost a prototype. When I did due diligence of establishing the market prices of desks, I realised that the unit at the Ministry had inflated the cost by Ksh1,700, which means only 250,000 desks would have been supplied,” noted CS Magoha.

Despite all these, the ministry has today Monday November 16 released a new school calendar for the years 2021 after holding consultations with stakeholders.

It is now official that all schools will be opening in January next year where PP 1 & 2 and 3, Class 5, 6 and 7 and Form 1, 2, and 3 will commence their second term on January 4th. Video/Courtesy
