Sunday, November 5, 2023 -Hellen Obiri, a Kenyan athlete, has been crowned the winner of the New York City Marathon where she beat her competitors in the Sunday hotly-contested Marathon.
Obiri received the crown after clocking a time of 2:27:23.
This victory marks Obiri’s second victory of the year after winning the Boston Marathon, which is considered the world’s oldest annual marathon, with 2:21:38.
“The women’s open-division winner today is Hellen Obiri of Kenya, in 2:27:23. The men’s open-division winner is Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia, in a course-record time of 2:04:58. Stay tuned for our podiums!” read a statement from the Marathon’s X page.
The Kenyan star made a fantastic pull away at 400 meters to win the race while another Kenyan, Sharon Lokedi, finished third position clocking 2:27:33.
The second position went to Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey who clocked a record time of 2:27:29.
“Congratulations to the phenomenal Hellen Obiri, winner of the 2023 New York Marathon. You are an inspiration for your hard work, tenacity, resilience, dedication and never-say-die spirit,” President Ruto stated.
The race kicked off on Sunday Novemner 5 at Staten Island and attracted 55,000 athletes who competed in all categories.
The marathon covered 26.2 miles (42 kilometers) and cut through all five boroughs within the Big Apple.
