Thursday, July 14, 2022 –Wafula Chebukati is again on the spot for awarding a tender to a Netherlands-based firm which has a questionable past.
In a media briefing held at Bomas of Kenya on Wednesday July 13 night, IEBC CEO Hussein Marjan appeared to struggle to explain how they ended up awarding the questionable firm the multi-million tender deal before taking due diligent.
Smartmatic Elections Company was awarded a whopping sh 4 billion to construct and prepare Kenya Integrated Election Management Systems (Kiems) kit for the August 9 general election.
And when Marjan was cornered with the question, his savior Wafula Chebukati could also speak nothing.
“You talked about the procurement process in awarding the company in procuring its services. Did you know that the cybercrimes Investigations and coordinations Act in Philipinnes after the 2016 elections called on its Smartmatics, it compromised the elections which led to the election of President Rodrigo Duterte.
“Did you know that in Uganda, the biometrics failed, resorting to them to revert to the manual. In Venezuela, the company in its own admission noted that the turnout voter system was manipulated by at least one million voters. Did you establish that before you awarded the company?” K24’s Ayub Abdukadir posed.
Marjan would then struggle for some seconds before urging the journalist to task the company to respond to the question saying he is not in a position of handling its weight.
“This would require the company to respond. This information did not come to our attention. It would be proper at this time, for the company to respond to such queries,” Marjan stated.
Journalist Abdukadir would then tell the Wafula Chebukati -led commission that they failed to do the required due diligence hence again risking the whole election process which is always high stake in Kenya.
Furthermore, Wafula Chebukati did not want journalists to field any question on the controversial 2017 general election servers. He blocked any such attempts from journalist and instead described it as ‘bygones’.
