Sunday, September 1, 2024 -You have been eagerly and hungrily waiting for that calling or appointment letter from an employer and when the letter finally arrives in your mail box, you start losing composure. Having premonitions and increased nerveoursness.
This fear on how to report on work is not new, everyone, at some point, doesn’t know how to handle this. Many people on getting the appointment letter or email, decide to spend time figuring it out on how to start the new life.
Well, nothing wrong with this condition but you don’t need to. In the first place, know that your employer had confidence in you after the interview day and perhaps after browsing through your CV.l and that is why you were shortlisted and finally picked to join the team. He knew he had the right candidate for the job. You, therefore, need to be more confident and compost than the employer himself. It increases your ratings.
And as you report at work on your first day, definately, you will undergo a three day or seven day induction exercise. This is meant to help you know your colleagues, their respective departments, department names, canteen where to take coffee and lunch among other things.
Be respectful throughout this early period because a small negative feedback from one colleague could spread out to the entire staff and, sometimes, upto the HR. It is not correct to display that impression during the first days at work station.
Last but not least, strictly adhere to the office rules and job ethics. This cannot be overemphasised. Everyone is taught this office etiquette at first year college level. How to behave at work. Your conduct in the office or with clients is critical for your success in your work. You compromise it and you lose your job.
Then you have to report on time and leave a few minutes after official leaving time. Do not show your supervisor that you are a home-sick man on your first day, week or first month at work. It paints a picture of unreliability, unpreparedness and an overall bad picture of yourself to the organization.
It goes without saying that, always consult on any new task. Do not do what you think or learnt at school. Books and ground work are two different things. Every organisation has its style of doing things. Never feel ashamed to ask. It does not only save the organisation from loses but equally saves your job. Good luck!
